Phillip Bullock
American baritone Phillip Bullock’s recent engagements include his return to Virginia Opera, where he inaugurated the role of Theoliver “Jake” Jeter in Loving vs. Virginia, a world premiere of the new opera by Damien Geter. He was a Resident Singer with the American Opera Project’s Composers and the Voice 2023–2025 cycle, led by Artistic Director Steven Osgood, and made his debut with PEAK Performances as Derrick Wheatt in Blind Injustice, a role he also sang at Lincoln Center with MasterVoices. Future engagements include the role of Charlie in Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s Three Decembers at Eugene Opera.
Past highlights include his appearances as Zodzetrick in Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha, his return to Cincinnati Opera, where he sang the roles of Cato and Watchman in Gregory Spears and Tracy K. Smith’s new critically acclaimed opera, Castor and Patience - voted the Best New Opera of 2022 by The New York Times. Additionally, he premiered Diane White-Clayton’s commissioned work, Many Mansions, with Boston Landmarks Orchestra, and he joined American Opera Projects for Composers and the Voice: Six Scenes, as well as appearing in Long Beach Opera’s The Romance of the Rose, written by Pulitzer nominee Kate Soper and directed by James Darrah.
A proponent of new American works, the artist participates in both productions and workshops celebrating fusions of a variety of styles, including, most notably, the provocative production of Deep Blue Sea with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, and Nathan Felix's Rivers Unite:Divide. Past season highlights include performances of Jake in Porgy and Bess at Semperoper Dresden, Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, and in the Royal Danish Opera production in Copenhagen. He appeared in performances of Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Figaro and Antonio), La Fanciulla del West (Jake), Don Carlos (Rodrique), Carmen (Morales and Escamillo), Romeo et Juliette (Gregorio), Falstaff (Pistola), Amahl and the Night Visitors (Balthazar), Little Women (John Brook), Faust (Valentin), The Magic Flute (Papageno), L’elisir d’amore (Belcore and Dulcamara) and Tosca (Angelotti).
Concert appearances include performances with the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, Lexington Philharmonic, and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, in repertoire including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Kurt Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Faure's Requiem, and Handel's Messiah and Mendelssohn’s Die erste Walpurgis Night, among others. Phillip completed the apprentice programs at Sarasota Opera, Virginia Opera, and Cincinnati Opera following his studies at the University of Kentucky School of Music.
